BLM Sudbury Reads!
During the summer of 2021, we launched Black Lives Matter Sudbury Reads, a four-part virtual literary series dedicated to increasing awareness of Black Canadian authors across all genres.
Throughout the series, we introduced audiences to both emerging and established Black Canadian writers, as well as local BIPOC authors whose stories are too often overlooked in mainstream spaces. The initiative highlighted the vital role literacy plays in strengthening our community and underscored the importance of arts and creativity to our collective well-being.
Children’s Literature – June 26, 2021
We hosted two virtual sessions: 12 p.m. for children ages 5–8 and 3 p.m. for children ages 9–14. Participants enjoyed a reading from Trailblazers: The Black Pioneers Who Have Shaped Canada by Tiyahna Ridley-Padmore, celebrating the contributions of Black pioneers in Canada.
Poetry and Short Stories – July 22, 2021
At 7 p.m., we gathered for an evening of powerful readings from The Great Black North: Contemporary African Canadian Poetry and other exciting works, showcasing the depth and diversity of African Canadian voices.
Local Lit – August 26, 2021
At 7 p.m., we featured readings from local authors, followed by engaging discussions about writing, storytelling, and the role of literature in our community. Authors were invited to participate through an open registration process.
Novel Book Club – September 27, 2021
Throughout the summer, participants followed along with a reading of Gutter Child by Jael Richardson. On September 27 at 7 p.m., we came together for a thoughtful book discussion, which included a special session with the author. Support was offered to anyone who needed assistance accessing a copy of the novel.
We were proud to create space for these voices and hope the series inspired readers to discover new works and diversify their bookshelves.
