Who we are
Black Lives Matter Sudbury (BLMS), founded in 2020, is a non-profit, grassroots organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and empowerment of Black communities in the Greater Sudbury Area and beyond.
We are a Black-led coalition of educators, students, activists, artists, and everything in between. Grounded in principles of solidarity and justice, we work in relationship with Indigenous communities and movements.
We are governed by a working board of Black individuals who guide our mission and ensure that our work remains centred in the lived experiences and needs of our communities.
Our work is rooted in solidarity, community care, and the pursuit of justice, with a vision of a world where Black people can live freely and fully.
We acknowledge that our membership is situated on N’Swakamok, later known as Sudbury, on the traditional lands of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and the Wahnapitae First Nation, in the Robinson-Huron Treaty territory.

Our Core Pillars of Work
-

Advocacy
We fight for justice through an abolitionist lens, dismantling carceral, colonial, and oppressive systems while building life-affirming alternatives rooted in care and collective liberation.
-

Education & Cultural Liberation
We create panels, workshops, and resources that equip our communities with the tools to resist oppression and imagine new possibilities for freedom.
We also celebrate Black cultural expression as resistance, healing, and self-determination, advancing an anti-colonial vision where Black arts and culture flourish without constraint.
-

Mutual Aid & Collective Care
We practice solidarity through mutual aid, redistributing resources, meeting urgent needs, and ensuring our communities thrive.
We value reciprocity, shared responsibility, and love as the foundation of resilient, just communities.
-

Intersectional Justice
We ground our work in an intersectional lens, recognizing how race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, and migration shape Black experiences.
We stand with all Black communities, including African, Caribbean, Afro-Indigenous, migrant, queer, trans, and disabled Black communities, knowing our liberation is collective and indivisible.
